Ayurveda is a system of traditional healing that has been practiced in India since the ancient Vedic period. This system is still practiced in many areas of the world as a form of alternative medicine where it is has enormous influence. This traditional healing system has been evolving throughout its existence and is now accepted in the western world as an alternative system of medicine.

The Ayurvedic system is known and recognized within the western world as a form of Complementary and Alternative Medicine or CAM. Some of it systems and methods have enjoyed a recent surge of popularity. The use of herbs, massages, and yoga exercises has been used to complement traditional and contemporary medical therapies. They are sometimes even used on their own as a complete form of CAM treatment.

Sushruta (Ayurvedic doctor and author living about 1000 B.C.) describes perfect health as “a state where all of one’s doshas (constitution) are in perfect balance, whose appetite is excellent, whose dhatus (tissue layers) function normally, whose malas (excretory systems), and whose self, senses, and mind remain full of bliss is in perfect health. As the philosophy of Ayurveda states, everything in our world has a unique personal vibration. All matter animate and inanimate has this unique personal vibration distinct from all matter. Only when there is an unhindered and free flow of this energy within a person is that individual in good health. When there are disturbances in the flow this causes illness within the person.

In today’s world with our polluted environment, poor eating habits, bad lifestyle choices, and high stress occupations it would be extremely difficult to find and individual with a harmonious and free flow of energy within. The minds and bodies of most people today are in a state of imbalance because of this situation. Ayurveda seeks to restore the balance of the energy flow within a person and thus bring on a state of health.

Ayurveda has several methods that it can use to restore balance in the body’s energy flow restore the original state of health. Meditation and yoga are relaxation techniques that can restore balance. Cleansing techniques such as the Panchakarma can be used alone or in conjunction with other methods. Herbal preparations whose vibrations are vital to the method are used as well and the whole plant is used because the natural vibrations of the plant will restore equilibrium without overloading the body.

Another effective Ayurvedic technique to restore harmony to the body’s energy flow is the use of appropriate music. Since music is a vibration it has the capacity to affect the vibrations of the body. Ayurveda healing music is an ancient part of the 5000 year old Ayurveda holistic natural healing system.  Healing music therapy induces a balance of health, happiness, and beauty.

Ayurvedic medicine believes that the pituitary gland in the brain is stimulated by the right music. This gland is pea sized but secretes powerful hormones and regulates homeostasis. Ayurvedic medicine uses ragas or Raga to create the melodies of healing music. Tones of the Raga are both sharper and flatter than the tones in western scales. The Raga is an Indian mode of music that is defined as “that which colors the mind”. This music has spiritual connections which western music does not. Ragas are believed to have positive effects on a lot of ailments including pain, insomnia, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and even aging. Ayurvedic music has been proven to control hypertension and liver function.

Ayurveda uses music to create vibrations in the cells of the body. These vibrations can change the consciousness of the person in a positive manner thereby restoring lost health.  Music has been known to improve efficiency and concentration during extended periods of work. The right kinds of music can sooth, refresh, and induce a relaxed mood. Music also manages negative emotions like anger, anxiety, and worry.
